Early Treatment

When should my child visit the dentist?

Early examination and preventive care will protect your child’s smile now and in the future. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend your child’s first dental examination occurs after the first tooth appears, but no later than the first birthday.

What are the main benefits of early treatment?

Early treatment aims to avoid the need for more extensive treatment later. For example, early treatment may prevent the need for extractions, or the need for long-term use of space maintainers.

What is interceptive orthodontic treatment?

This is a treatment that is done early, often when a child still has some of their baby teeth. This type of treatment is usually done when a child is between two and six years old.

What types of treatments are available for children?

Orthodontic treatment for children may involve an expander, which gradually makes more space for developing teeth. For children who have lost a tooth prematurely, a space maintainer may be used to hold the space open until the permanent tooth erupts.
